FAQs
These are some of the most common things people ask before getting started. If you don't see the answer to your question, send us a note here or at info@bambootherapy.ca and we'll get back to you.
Bamboo Therapy is a shared website and booking platform. Each therapist here is an independent Registered Psychotherapist (RP) registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), running their own private practice.
When you book with one of the therapists, you're entering into a relationship with that individual. They handle your care, your records, and your billing independently.
Psychotherapy, also called talk therapy, is a collaborative process that helps you manage your mental and emotional wellness, both reactively and proactively. Although there is real science and structure in the process, it is not one-size-fits-all and is based on each person’s unique needs and goals.
Psychotherapy is a controlled act and a regulated health profession. Licensed Psychotherapists are Master- or Doctorate-level trained mental health practitioners who are educated in the science of human psychology, neuroscience, and how the brain and nervous system affect behaviour.
Talk therapy has the power to change how the brain functions and perceives things. By integrating psychology with neuroscience and using the strong connection between the mind and our physical biology, psychotherapy can improve a person’s overall health and wellness as well as their relationships.
Therapy provides a safe, confidential, and non-judgemental space for you to process emotions, identify thought and behaviour patterns that may be holding you back, and explore your perceptions of past and present experiences. You'll learn strategies to cope with life’s challenges, and gain new tools and skills to manage the physical, mental, and emotional symptoms that show up. This can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve self-awareness and confidence, and strengthen relationships through boundary setting (it’s not as scary as it sounds) and communication. This applies not only to personal relationships, but professional and social ones as well.
Therapy sessions are your space to talk about anything and everything you want. There is never pressure to share more than you feel ready for, but as we understand more about your past and life experiences, the better we can support you. There’s no such thing as TMI here - your therapist is here for all of it. Honestly.
In your first few sessions, you and your therapist will spend some time talking about your background, your current life, challenges you’re facing, and your therapy goals, whether they’re short-term or long-term. Don’t worry if you’re not sure where to start - if you like, your therapist will guide the sessions with your input.
Therapy is a collaborative process between you and your therapist. The best results happen over time, with a consistent and a shared commitment from both of you. The process and change evolves, unfolds, and builds on itself. There may be ‘aha’ breakthrough moments, but more often the changes are subtle, gradual shifts that lead to meaningful change for you.
Therapy isn’t just for those currently in crisis or going through something hard. In fact, working with a therapist before things go sideways is the best way to set yourself up with tools and skills that will help you manage tough situations. In other words, therapy is for everyone who wants to be able to handle life’s curve balls as well as they can instead of getting knocked down by them.
That makes sense, and the people in the grocery store check-out line are likely grateful you feel that way. The truth is, though, that it can feel really good to talk openly to someone outside your regular circles who is there to listen to you and hear where you’re coming from without bias.. Having a trained professional who isn’t close to the situation can provide really useful perspective, observations, and thoughtful, neutral feedback. And, if you find a therapist who feels like a good fit, they won’t feel like a stranger for long.
You can learn more about each of our therapists here, but the best way to see who's the right fit for you is to book a free 15-minute chat so you can see what feels best.
The first step is connecting with a therapist. Start by booking a 15-minute video or phone call to see if it feels like a good fit.
You can read more about our therapists here or connect with us to help get things started.
Booking is done through Owl Practice, a practice management platform. The therapists practice independently but use a shared Owl Practice account for scheduling convenience. Your records are held privately under your individual therapist's profile — other therapists cannot access them.
Your therapist is the health information custodian of your personal health information under Ontario's Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA). Your records belong to them and will not be shared without your consent.
Receipts are issued in your therapist's name with their CRPO registration number, which you can use to submit to extended health benefit plans.
